Register as an L.A. Works Volunteer
L.A. Works offers a variety of ways for volunteers to get involved, whether for just a couple of hours or as an ongoing commitment to service. But first, you must register at our Member Center. After you complete your registration you will be sent an email with an activation link (this may take up to one hour to reach you). You must click on this link to activate your account and be able to sign up for volunteer projects.
If you are already a registered volunteer, you must log-in at our Member Center using your email address and password to be able to sign up for volunteer projects.
Finding Volunteer Opportunities
Look through the Volunteer Calendar to find one-time volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups. Most calendar projects take place on evenings during the week or during the day on the weekends and only require a few hours. The majority of these projects are managed by L.A. Works for our non-profit partners and are led by a trained volunteer Project Leader. You can sign up for these projects directly on our website by clicking on the "Sign Me Up" button (unless the project is at capacity, indicated by a red dot).
Browse our Community Connections section to find ways to support the programming needs of our many nonprofit partners. These opportunities are all managed directly by our nonprofit partners. If you are interested in one of these opportunities you can click on the "Have Agency Contact Me" button and the nonprofit agency should respond to your inquiry within 72 hours with more information.
You can Search Opportunities by date, location, or impact area. You can also search by skills and interests and find projects suitable for minors.
If you are interested in assuming a more active role in your community, you can become an L.A. Works Project Leader. Project Leaders assume leadership for one of our managed projects, handling programming, communications and volunteer management responsibilities. By attending a Project Leader Training you will learn how easy it is to lead on an issue that you care deeply about and make a difference in your community!
L.A. Works also manages Long-Term Opportunities such as "Let's Read" and "TeamWorks" that provide a richer, more comprehensive volunteer experience for you and the agencies we work with. These projects happen periodically and are featured on our homepage when they occur.
Volunteering as a Group
L.A. Works makes it easy to volunteer with family members, friends and/or colleagues. Click here to learn how to create a volunteer team and then sign your team up for an L.A. Works managed project.
Youth Volunteerism
While L.A. Works projects are always suitable for volunteers age 18 and older, many of our projects are also open to minors. The description page of each project states the age requirement. If a project is open to minors, then they will need to bring and have signed by a parent/guardian a Volunteer Agreement & Release For Minors Form in order to volunteer. Minors under 13 years of age will also need to be accompanied at the volunteer project by a parent/guardian.
To search for age-appropriate projects for minors, go to Search Opportunities and use the age parameter.
Children under the age of 13 are unable to sign-up for projects on the website (federal law prohibits this). If you would like to bring children under the age of 13 to volunteer then you must sign yourself up for the project and then email the project leader to tell them the names and ages of any children under the age of 13 you wish to bring along. Or, you can form a family volunteer team and sign up your children as team members.
Service Inclusion – People with Disabilities
L.A. Works welcomes volunteers of all levels of ability! As a participant in the Tarjan Center Service Inclusion Project, we seek to make service and volunteerism equally accessible to people with disabilities, and firmly believe that we strengthen the social fabric of our community by involving all in service. We will provide reasonable accommodations for our managed volunteer projects whenever possible with advance notice. For more information please email Gilbert Gonzales.
Volunteer History
Once an individual registers as a volunteer with L.A. Works, her/his record of volunteer service is tracked and can be accessed through our website. Attendance at L.A. Works managed projects is logged by the project leader, allowing for an accurate volunteer record to be maintained for every registered volunteer. For opportunities not managed by L.A. Works, our system allows for a volunteer to record her/his own volunteer service. To access your volunteer history, go to the Member Center, log-in, select the Personal Information tab, and then select the Volunteer History link.
Corporate Service
Our BusinessWorks program is the leader in corporate community service and volunteerism in Los Angeles, setting a new trend in corporate philanthropy that is focused on action, innovation and impact.
