As a 501(c)3 nonprofit volunteer action center, we create and manage hands-on community service projects to mobilize volunteers throughout the greater Los Angeles area. About the role: We are seeking to hire two passionate, part-time, temporary staff members to act as Climate Champions with the goal to encourage increased participation in climate action and volunteerism. This part-time role involves tabling at museums, community events, and other locations to recruit volunteers, encourage individuals to sign California Volunteers’ Climate Action Counts pledge, and raise awareness about L.A. Works’ mission and programs. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about climate advocacy, comfortable with public outreach, and eager to build relationships that drive community engagement.
About California Volunteers’ Climate Action Counts: California Volunteers, Office of the Governor, is leading the Climate Action Counts campaign to inspire individuals to take simple yet impactful climate actions. The campaign encourages Californians to pledge their commitment to reducing emissions, conserving resources, and supporting sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:

Represent L.A. Works at community events, museums, and public spaces, educating attendees about climate action and volunteer opportunities.

Recruit individuals to sign the Climate Action Counts pledge, sharing actionable steps they can take to make a difference.

Communicate L.A. Works’ mission, programs, and initiatives to the public, inspiring participation in volunteer activities.

Engage with diverse community members, fostering relationships and encouraging ongoing civic engagement.

Track engagement metrics, including pledge sign-ups and volunteer interest, and report results to L.A. Works team through data management system(s).

Set up and manage tabling materials, ensuring a welcoming and informative display at outreach events.

Collaborate with the L.A. Works team to identify high-impact outreach locations and improve engagement strategies.

Maintain a positive and professional presence while representing L.A. Works and California Volunteers.
Qualification and Skills:
-
Passion for climate action, sustainability, and community engagement.
-
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with diverse audiences.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, comfortable with public speaking and one-on-one engagement.

Experience in volunteer recruitment, community outreach, or advocacy is a plus.

Self-motivated and able to work independently in dynamic public settings.
Additional requirements:

Ability to lift and transport tabling materials (up to 30 pounds).

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to attend outreach events across Los Angeles.

Availability to work flexible hours, including occasional evening and weekend shifts.

Proficiency with Salesforce and Microsoft Office Suite.

All other duties assigned by supervisor.
Reporting: This position reports to the Outreach Coordinator.
Time expectations and salary: This is a temporary, part-time (min 10 hours/week, max 40 hours), non-exempt position, with flexible but potentially irregular hours based on needs. Hourly salary of $22/hour is commensurate with internal equity. This is a temporary position for 6 months with the possibility for extension dependent on funding. The job description doesn't constitute a contract of employment and L.A. Works may exercise its employment-at-will rights at any time.
COVID-19 safety: L.A. Works requires its employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to certain exceptions as required by law. All employees are also required to submit to additional masking and social distancing requirements.
Background check: As a finalist for a job, you will be subject to a routine background check. The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job.
