Become a VISTA at L.A. Works!

Kickstart a nonprofit career with our AmeriCorps VISTA program, Volunteer Corps. As a member of the L.A. Works' Volunteer Corps, you'll be placed at one of our nonprofit partner organizations for one calendar year and tasked with capacity building activities. As a VISTA, you will serve as a full-time volunteer with a mission to lift communities out of poverty through supporting local organizations expand their capacity to make change.

Throughout the course of the year, you will grow professionally within an innovative, highly respected L.A.-based organization. L.A. Works provides ongoing trainings through monthly meetings and leadership opportunities.
Benefits​
  • Living Allowance: Bi-weekly living allowance to cover basic living expenses.

  • Relocation Allowance: If you move 50+ miles from your home to a new community, you receive relocation travel assistance and a settling-in allowance. 

  • End of Service Award: Choose between the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award ($6,895) to pay for education expenses or a cash stipend ($1,800).

  • Healthcare Benefit: Choose between reimbursement for healthcare or a healthcare plan. Dental and vision are also included. 

  • Professional Development: Receive in-person and virtual professional development opportunities from L.A. Works and AmeriCorps VISTA throughout the year.

  • Non-Competitive Eligibility (NCE): Qualify for NCE, a unique hiring path that makes it easier for federal agencies to hire you.

  • Child Care: May be eligible to receive a child care benefit if you have children under the age of 13. 

Responsibilities can include
  • Conduct needs assessment of organization and the community

  • Research and develop new potential programs

  • Improve outreach efforts and methods

  • Evaluate current sustems for improvement

  • Support fundraising efforts

  • Grant research and writing

  • Develop volunteer infrastructure

  • Recruit community members and volunteers

Non-profit focus areas include Children/youth education, Environmental sustainability, Family services, Hunger/homelessness, and Justice/legal services.​

Eligibility
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the U.S.

  • Able to commit full-time for 12 months

  • Prior community service experience preferred​
