About the role: We are seeking to hire two part-time, temporary staff to act as Volunteer Captains in leading and managing volunteers assisting with wildfire recovery efforts. In addition to providing volunteer management support for the Resource Hubs that the Emergency Network of Los Angeles is coordinating, the Volunteer Captains will lead volunteers that L.A. Works recruits for wildfire related programming. This role involves communicating with volunteers prior to shifts and coordinating volunteer activities at various locations to support efforts to individuals and communities affected by the fires. The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator with experience in volunteer management, disaster response, or community engagement.
Essential Job Functions

Key Responsibilities:

Communicate with registered volunteers to ensure high show-rate for each shift.

Coordinate, train, and oversee volunteers on-site at designated wildfire recovery locations.

Ensure volunteers are equipped with necessary supplies, instructions, and safety guidelines.

Act as the primary point of contact for nonprofit host organization and volunteers, providing guidance and addressing any issues or concerns.

Work closely with nonprofit service organizations and government agencies to ensure volunteer efforts are addressing community needs.

Maintain accurate records of volunteer participation and contributions.

Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information in accordance with organizational policies and legal requirements.

Provide clear and timely communication with volunteers regarding schedules, expectations, and updates.

Uphold safety protocols and ensure compliance with all organizational and site-specific regulations.

Provide on-site problem-solving and support as needed to enhance volunteer experience and effectiveness.

Assist with post-shift debriefs and gather feedback for continuous improvement of volunteer efforts.

Contribute to reporting on volunteer impact and program effectiveness.
Qualification and Skills:

Experience in volunteer coordination, disaster relief, nonprofit work, or a related field.

Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to manage diverse groups of volunteers.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate volunteers.

Ability to remain flexible and adapt to rapidly changing environments and needs.

Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures related to disaster recovery work is a plus.

Ability to travel between sites as needed (reliable transportation required).
Additional requirements:

Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.

Valid driver’s license.

Access to personal car for occasional travel throughout Los Angeles County.

Availability for evening and weekend shifts.

Proficiency with Salesforce and Microsoft Office Suite.

Any and all other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Reporting: This position reports to the Nonprofit Relations Coordinator.
Time expectations and salary: This is a temporary, part-time (min 10 hours/week, max 40 hours), non-exempt position, with flexible but potentially long or irregular hours based on needs. Hourly salary of $24/hour is commensurate with internal equity. This is a temporary position for 10 weeks with the possibility for extension dependent on funding and fit. The job description doesn't constitute a contract of employment and L.A. Works may exercise its employment-at-will rights at any time.

COVID-19 safety: L.A. Works requires its employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to certain exceptions as required by law. All employees are also required to submit to additional masking and social distancing requirements.
